Lab Shadowing Program
As a lab shadow, you can spend two to three hours with a current PRISM student in his/her lab, getting a sense of what it is like to do research on a daily basis. We make every effort to match up you with a PRISM student whose research is related to your intended major track. The program runs in the summer for John Jay College (JJC) underclassmen, and in the summer and January for CUNY Justice Academy (CJA) partner students and some JJC Honors Program first-year students. Spots are limited and subject to preliminary PRISM acceptance.
**Lab Shadowing will run this summer 2015 from June through early August. Interested students should contact Fran Jimenez, PRISM Outreach Coordinator, at email@example.com for more information.
Eligibility Requirements to Participate in Lab Shadowing:
- Good Performance in Gen Chem I, Not Yet Completed Organic Chem I
- Minimum GPA of 3.0 for JJC Students, 2.75 for CJA Students
- Genuine interest in future PRISM participation
- A completed PRISM application
- Some interest in potentially attending graduate or medical school
Winter 2015 Lab Shadowing took place during January as PRISM welcomed CJA partner students and promising JJC Honors Program students. Shadowing students visited with supervising PRISM “buddies” in the labs of Dr. Carpi/Brown, Dr. Diaczuk, Dr. Rauceo, and Dr. Lents. We look forward to the coming months when many of our shadows will be eligible to officially apply to PRISM. To see highlights from this winter’s shadowing experiences, click here for pictures.
Lab Open Houses/Tours
Several times a year PRISM hosts laboratory open houses where community college partner students visit some of our research labs. During these brief tours, visiting students meet PRISM students and mentors who talk about their lab projects, showcase lab equipment, and potentially perform some kind of technique or demonstration. If interested, contact Fran Jimenez at firstname.lastname@example.org to learn the details for the next set of tours.
